The University of Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory is investing in the latest technology for genetic sequencing. Sequencing the genetic material (DNA or RNA) of infectious agents can be a powerful tool for identifying an agent, for monitoring the changes in a disease agent and for the discovery of new or emerging diseases. The high throughput methods of next-generation sequencing can decrease costs and increase speed of identification. The UMN VDL partners with the University Genomics Center to offer sequencing and analysis of viruses such as influenza and PRRS. For information on sequencing tests offered by the VDL see the Viral PCR page.
