VDL to offer Triplex PCR for PED, TGE, and PDCo Viruses

October 31, 2016

On Monday, November 7th, 2016, The University of Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) will begin offering a real time multiplex PCR that simultaneously detects Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDV), Porcine Deltacoronavirus (PDCoV) and Porcine Transmissible Gastrointestinal Virus (TGEV) in porcine samples (individual oral fluids or environmental samples; individual or pooled intestinal homogenates, feces or fecal swabs). The assay will be tested Monday through Friday and routine results will be available within 24 working hours (or sooner if designated as rush/same day). The test is $30 per sample.

Validation by the assay manufacturer (Qiagen) determined diagnostic sensitivity to be 99.6% and diagnostic specificity to be 100%. The VDL confirmed assay performance with a comprehensive comparison of this assay to our previously used assays (Ambion Path-ID Multiplex One-Step RT-PCR). After testing 360 samples across the sample types listed above, 98% correlation was found for PEDV and PDCoV, while 100% agreement was observed for TGEV.
