Note: A $10 accession fee will be applied to all submissions. All fees are in US $.
Note on days tested and turnaround times: Samples must be received at least one business day before the scheduled testing day. New client accounts can take up to 2-3 business days to establish before testing can begin. Samples may not always be tested on the first scheduled day after they arrive; however, it is our goal to complete testing within the posted turnaround time. If rush testing is desired, please contact us.

live or freshly dead fish
leakproof container or plastic bags
1 cm x 1 cm ear tissue (1/2 inch notching pliers)
6 or 10 ml red top tube (no additive or gel)
For individual testing of ear notch samples only. See Molecular Diagnostics, Viral PCR for BVD ear notch pooled testing.
head or whole brain
sealed, leakproof container
See the Rabies home page for more information on submitting for this test. After the brain samples are collected at the VDL, staff at the Minnesota Department of Health perform the fluorescent antibody test.
1) Tendon (at least 1 cm); 2) heart (at least 1 cm3); 3) semen (at least 0.5 ml)
1,2) whirl-pac or plastic bag; 2) plastic tube
The PCR portion of this test is run at the Minnesota Poultry Testing Laboratory. The virus isolation is conducted in the St. Paul facility.
This panel includes a turkey-specific qPCR (will not detect chicken Reovirus) and 2 types of viral isolation (using egg inoculation and cell lines). We expect to isolate virus from any sample with an initial positive PCR result. An initial negative PCR result, however, will require confirmation via isolation results to be confident in the results of the assay.
Turkey Reovirus (TRV) isolation may be requested independently, but any request for TRV PCR will also include viral isolation (at the panel price of $115).
The specimen type(s) listed for this test will provide an adequate sample volume to conduct this test. If multiple tests are requested on a specimen, there may not be adequate sample volume to perform each test. Please submit an adequate sample volume to meet the requirements of each test.

Once ready, isolates are shipped M-Th from the laboratory. No shipping on Fridays.
*The turnaround time may vary depending upon growth of virus in cells.

Turnaround time will change if any case(s) have to be reinoculated for any reason. See Appendix A for a list of cell types used to isolate viruses.
